Emma McGuire who sadly passed away last year from cancer playing with the Pearse Melbourne club in Australia
A GAA club in Melbourne has dedicated their 2024 jersey to Limerick’s Emma McGuire who tragically died from cancer last year at only 32 years of age.
Pearse Melbourne has designed a new jersey in memory of their former clubmate with the statement “Ní bheidh a leithéidí arís ann Emma McGuire” (There will never be another like Emma McGuire).
The jersey is a Limerick replica to represent Emma’s home county colors. All the money raised from the sales of the jersey will be donated to the Milford Hospice in Limerick.
Emma joined the Melbourne club in 2018 and was part of their winning seven’s team in 2020. During her time with the Australian team she had many accolades including captaining the Victoria team at state games in 2019 before coming back to win the sevens tournament.
In a statement made by Pearse Melbourne club on Instagram after Emma’s passing they said “Emma’s suitcase went home a lot heavier than when she landed filled with medals, trophies and the many of the Player of the Year awards she won in her time here.
“Her quick wit left its mark with her famous ‘player ratings’ after big games. Emma was always up for the craic and sang Grace every night out we had.”
Originally from Cahercorney, Emma was an avid GAA player and trained locally with the St Ailbes ladies team.
Alongside this fundraiser on the other side of the world one of her former St Ailbes teammates Caroline Hickey also embarked on a trek to Everest Base Camp last December in honor of Emma.
