THE ACHIEVEMENTS of Limerick hurling legend Bernie Hartigan were celebrated by his club Old Christians on Saturday last.
The southside GAA club paid tribute to Hartigan 50 years on from Limerick's 1973 All-Ireland win. Hartigan was a member of the team that beat Kilkenny to win the Liam MacCarthy Cup in 1973.
Hartigan has remained a big presence in the club long since his playing days. He has filled many roles within the club, including as an underage coach and mentor to players on their junior hurling team.
A sizeable crowd was in attendance at Phil Flannery's Bar on Denmark Street as club treasurer Michael Keogh presented Bernie with a crystal trophy to mark his achievements.
“I would like to thank all the members of Old Christians GAA club for this much appreciated presentation,” said Bernie. “I have truly enjoyed every moment that I have spent with everyone involved over the years and look forward to many great team achievements in the future.
“From when the club was formed in 1962, it has been great to be involved. Winning the senior football championship in that year was fantastic, but we have great times ahead as well.”
Old Christians GAA club are based in Rathbane on the southside of Limerick city and their adult team plays in the Limerick GAA Junior A Hurling Championship but will play in the new Premier JAHC in 2024.
