Ballinrobe manager not getting carried away with big win

MCGOVERN PARK in Newport was the setting for a mixed palette of emotions on Saturday evening.
But the Ballinrobe players and management weren’t getting carried away with their six-goal victory as Peter Ford told The Mayo News.
“We didn’t play particularly well this evening, but once the goals went in we had always had a comfort zone,” said the winning manager.
“We didn’t score for the last 15 minutes of the first half and that’s just not good enough. A lot of lads didn’t play well either, so there’s a lot of room for improvement.
“Burrishoole are always hard to beat and it was no different today,” he added. “They just got caught for the goals really and we got one or two break-away goals near the end too which flattered us a bit I think.
“The important thing was to win and pick up no injuries because two weeks between games will pass very quickly. As usual, we’ve plenty to work on, but a win in championship away from home is always good. “Coming here, I thought if we won by two or three points we’d be happy enough and we have to be reasonably happy now that we’ve got the win,” Ford explained before casting his mind over the game just concluded and the challenges stretching out in front.
“Some lads didn’t play that well today and we did a lot of stupid things too. The weather made handling difficult at times, but we still had a lot of unforced errors and other aspects of our own play we weren’t happy with. At least we can we can address those things over the next few sessions from a position of strength and it’s always easier to do that when you’re winning.
“We’ve ticked the first box but now we have to get ready for Kiltane and that won’t be easy because they have to win,” he continued.
“We played them in the league and only won it by four with a late goal and a point. They were missing lads that day, so we won’t be taking anything for granted. We’re not good enough to take any team for granted. Until you win a county title, you’re just a number like everyone else and we’re far from the finished article.”
