South Limerick see off Limerick City to win Neville Cup

SOUTH LIMERICK captured the Neville Cup after a commanding display against Limerick City last week in Mick Neville Park. The 12-point win gives the south schools the double following victory in the football final.

The City girls were probably feeling the effects of their exertions in their semi–final but they fought to the very end. The difference between the teams was undoubtedly the scoring ability of the South girls.

Ciara Murphy had been in devastating scoring form in the Larkin Shield and here she proved that she is just as talented with the small ball. She was ably assisted by Saoirse Bluett from Effin NS and Aisling Sheeran from Scoil Dean Cussen.

Lucy Higgins played a captain’s part and didn’t put a foot wrong in either game. South Limerick hit the ground running and Saoirse Bluett had a goal and a point to her name in the opening minutes.

Limerick City had several close efforts but couldn’t find their scoring touch. Eva McCarthy, Eve Egan and Éilís O’Neill kept carrying the fight to their opponents but the South defence was rock solid and they led 1-2 to 0-0 at the break.

Two Murphy long range points stretched that advantage to seven. Orla Mullins tacked on a lovely point before Aisling Sheeran struck for a decisive score with a second goal for South Limerick
