Learn from the best at Limerick farm walk this week

All welcome: John and Olivia Macnamara and family will be opening up their farm in Knockainey to one and all this Thursday, September 12

IN ONE of the hardest years for grassland management in living memory, farmers can learn from the best next week at a farm walk.

It takes place at 11.30am this Thursday, September 12 on the Knockainey farm of John and Olivia Macnamara and their children - Caoimhe, Conor, Ailbhe and Padraic -  winners of the 2023 NDC & Kerrygold Quality Milk Awards.

The farm walk is hosted by Kerry Agribusiness and Teagasc. Eircode: V35 PC98

This is a great opportunity for dairy farming families and new entrants into dairy farming to see at first-hand the types of achievable steps which can raise quality standards and help to maintain those standards throughout the year.

The farm walk will provide insight into the Macnamara family farm enterprise; on-farm measures and actions to protect water quality; high solids production from ryegrass and clover swards.

A blade of grass won't be out of place on the day.

Mr Macnamara believes that working together fosters a strong family connection and ensures the Macnamara family values are ingrained in their family farm which goes back to his  father Paddy.

Mr Macnamara has three other farming national titles under his belt - FBD Young Farmer of the Year 2005, Farmyard of the Year 2009, Grassland Farmer of the Year 2018.

The 'five-in-a-row' was started by his late father Paddy who won the National Farmyard Award in 1969.

Mr Macnamara is incredibly modest and humble about his successes, and is always more than willing to share his expertise built up over the years.
