Newcastle West Show back with a bang after last year’s wash-out

NEWCASTLE West Show fell foul of the weather last year but this Sunday, June 23 it is set to bask in glorious sunshine.

The show, which is one of the longest running in Ireland dating back over 100 years, was due to take place on Sunday, July 16, 2023 but the committee had to postpone it due to the amount of surface water after monsoon rain.

It had been hoped to find another date in 2023 but unfortunately it had to be cancelled until this summer. Claire Geary, a member of the hard-working committee, said last year was very disappointing.

“A huge effort had gone into planning and organising the show, and deciding to cancel two days out was a very tough call to make. Our sponsors were very supportive, allowing us to take the sponsorship forward to this year, and with a new date, June 23, the show will take place in Shanagarry (V42V886) just outside Newcastle West, on the main Killarney Road,” said Ms Geary.

The show has a full programme of events running throughout the day, with something for everyone, and not just those with an interest in all things equine, she says.

“There's a big musical line-up, organised by Emmet Scanlon. Ger's mobile pet farm, and the junior tractor run will be of interest to to the younger visitors, and we're delighted to welcome Little Rosebuds Pamper Parlour, who will have mascots, a hula hoop interactive disco, as well as hair braiding, glitter tattoos, face gems, and nail painting.

“The dog show is always popular, and this year there are extra classes, along with a gun dog qualifier for Beltra Show, and a talk and demonstration by Pawsative Steps. Macra will be doing farm skills demonstrations, and the young cattle handlers will be doing demonstrations on the preparation of cattle for showing.

“Poulty classes return this year after a few years absence, and there is a full programme of show jumping and showing classes for horse and pony competitors,” said Ms Geary.

“In all the day should be good, with something for all interests and ages. We just hope the rain stays away this year!” she concluded.
