GREEN spaces across the city are being assessed to see what future projects could be planned.

An expert group has been set up, which is co-chaired by the Mayor of Limerick John Moran and Councillor Seán Hartigan.

It also includes members from Limerick City and County Council, Teagasc, Coillte, the OPW, Limerick City Partnership and National Parks and Wildlife Services.

The group will be looking at how to connect transformational spaces to each other to create a chain of amenities.

The aim of the group is to focus on liveability, create more liveable spaces and make Limerick an attractive place for people to stay in and live.

The expert group has now met five times since it was first set up in early 2025.

Some of the projects they looked at in the metropolitan area included the Northside Riverside Park, public realm on King's Island, Colbert Park and Garryowen Green.

The expert group will develop a programme of work, map existing green spaces and heritage facilities, identify gaps and improve facilities in public parks.

Councillor Seán Hartigan is co-chair of the expert group and he said that the focus is on sustainability, biodiversity and improving parks.

He said: “I'm proud to see this group already bringing forward ambitious, nature-led solutions that will enhance people's quality of life across Limerick.

“We want to protect our heritage, our waterways and our green spaces.”

He said that the plans will offer support to both physical and mental wellbeing.

“Our task as a group is simple - to create a plan that improves our open spaces to serve both our people and our planet for generations to come.”

Mayor John Moran added: “We are continuing to reimagine Limerick's future and, naturally, enhancing our public spaces and heritage assets will be a huge part of that.

“I've asked the group to think boldly and strategically not just about what we need now, but what Limerick will need for generations to come.

“We are continuing to build a more livable Limerick for all.”

The group plans on agreeing on a programme of works for enhancing green spaces and heritage assets and this will be updated annually.

The group will focus on different areas of Limerick at each meeting this year.
