SAFETY works are to take place along the route of a proposed new greenway linking University of Limerick (UL) to Annacotty.
Alternative access is to be provided for pedestrians for a fortnight.
Active Travel bosses have decided to close off access to the riverside walkway.
It’s due to natural weathering of the current structure and a build-up of excess moisture over a long period of time.
The closure is anticipated to continue until Friday, June 28.
During that time, an appointed contractor is to carry out work to provide a temporary over-bridge to take the load off the existing structure.
Senior engineer with the Active Travel team in Limerick City and County Council, Sean McGlynn, said: “Our primary concern within everything we do as a unit in Active Travel is safety. The project team has identified that the steel support beams on this structure need attention and work is to begin to address this as a matter of priority.”
He said talks are taking place with UL bosses to ensure the process is as smooth as possible.
“We thank the public for their patience while these works are being carried out as we continue to progress this important project,” he added.

An alternative route for those who ordinarily use the current bridge will be in use while works take place. Clear signage marking this alternative route is to be provided.
