Tidy Towns group ask politicians to remove posters from their award-winning Limerick village

Posters of four candidates running in Limerick City have been erected in Castleconnell

AN AWARD-WINNING Tidy Towns group have asked politicians not to put up posters in their village, and to remove existing ones.

A local resident sent photos to Limerick Live this Sunday of posters of four candidates in Castleconnell - Michelle Hayes, Deputy Willie O’Dea, Cllr Elisa O’Donovan and Dee Ryan. It is not known if there are more.

They said the village was a poster-free zone during the recent elections in June and asked what has changed.

Limerick Live contacted Castleconnell Tidy Towns, who, this month won their first ever national Tidy Towns silver medal in the 30 years that they have been entering the competition.

A spokesperson said during the council, mayoral and European elections in the summer they had politely requested political parties to not put posters in the inner village.

“This was adhered to fully to our great delight as we were in the middle of the Tidy Towns adjudication process. For the General Election we had intended to make a similar request to the political parties.

“However, we anticipated that no posters would go up until the Taoiseach had dissolved the Dail. This appears to have been a little naive on our behalf. At this moment, there are a lot of posters in the inner village,” said the spokesperson for Castleconnell Tidy Towns.

They said they put up a Facebook post on Saturday requesting that the candidates for the election please remove the posters from the inter village.

“We acknowledge that we have no authority to insist on a poster-free village.

"We wish everyone the very best of luck. We applaud people for putting their names forward,” said the spokesperson.
