Why have you decided to run?
I am a passionate and determined Limerick woman. I love Limerick city, especially my own area.
For five years our area, Rathbane/Janesboro, Kennedy/Glasgow Park Careys/Hyde Road Ballinacurra Weston, Carew Park, Southill, Lynwood, Norwood Singland and Old Cork Road, has not had a city councillor while there is a high level of representation in other areas.
As a result, our community has been left behind.
I am a qualified chef, a young widow, mother of two teenage children and I am familiar with the ongoing problems faced by working parents.
Having lost my husband Damien O’Shaughnessy to cancer in October 2018, I also understand the difficulties faced by carers.
I know what it is to bring up a family in difficult times and to want a safe environment for our children.
My wish for the senior members of our community is that they feel safe in their homes and they have access to public services, especially healthcare.
Reliable public transport is also essential to maintain independence as they age.
Damien and I have always been community activists, we ran Queen of Peace Youth Club, organised many community events and always aimed to be an approachable voice for our locality.
I am currently a member of Limerick City Community Radio management and board and have been a board member of the National Parent’s Council, Primary.
I want to make a difference, to support a better quality of life in Limerick East.
The best opportunity for doing this is to become a city councillor.
What do you think is lacking in your area and what will you be campaigning for?
A community centre for the Rathbane /Janesboro, Glasgow /Kennedy Park area is a priority. This will address the lack of amenities.
Improvements to roads and footpaths are also top of my list.
I recognise the need for traffic-calming measures on the Old Cork Road and I will work towards a solution.
Finally, I support calls for a 24-hour Garda station in Castleconnell to service surrounding areas.
Why should people vote for me?
My community rallied around my family in our hour of need during my late husband Damien’s illness.
The power of people was amazing and got us through hard times. Now I want to give back to our community.
I will listen to your needs, I will represent you and our community will not be forgotten. When I put my mind to doing, I find a way to get it done.
I will work tirelessly for YOU, the electorate, if you elect me as YOUR City Councillor. VOTE KIELY # 1 OF OUR OWN
