Members of the Defence Forces were deployed at the scene
A GARDA investigation is underway after a viable pipe bomb was discovered in a housing estate in Limerick city.
A number of houses in the Moyross area were evacuated after the device was found during planned garda searches in the area this Thursday morning.
Having cordoned off the area, gardai requested the assistance of an army bomb disposal team which was dispatched to the scene from Collins Barracks in Cork.
Following their arrival shortly before 2pm, members of the Defence Forces examined the device and made it safe.
The device, which has been described as viable, was removed and will be given to gardai who are investigating the discovery.
The area was declared safe at around 3pm this Thursday.
Gardai at Henry Street are investigating and can be contacted at (061) 212400.
