A MAN has been charged by gardai and is due to appear in court following a significant drugs seizure in Limerick on St Valentine's Day.

Gardaí attached to the Divisional Drugs Unit at Henry Street station conducted an intelligence led operation on Saturday targeting the sale and supply of drugs in Limerick city.

"A domestic residence was searched and gardaí discovered suspected cannabis herb with an estimated value of over €100,000," said a garda spokesperson who added: "An adult male, aged in his 50s, was arrested and detained at a garda station in the Limerick city under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996."

The suspect has since been charged in connection with the seizure and is expected to appear before a sitting of Limerick District Court on Monday.

Gardai say the seized drugs will now be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis and that investigations are ongoing.

Saturday's seizure forms part of Operation Tara, an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy launched by the former Garda Commissioner Drew Harris in July 2021.

Gardai say Operation Tara aims to disrupt, dismantle, and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels — international, national, and local — involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, and local sale and supply of controlled drugs.
