BISHOP Brendan Leahy has described the attack on the Islamic Cultural Centre in Dooradoyle as "shocking and worrying" - and has expressed his solidarity with the local Muslim community.

"As has been pointed out by others, such an attack is uncommon and not supported by the vast majority of people in Limerick. No matter what our creed or religious belonging, we are all brothers and sisters, children of the one God," he said.

The leader of the Catholic church in Limerick has described the incident as "a wake-up call" for people to work together and build peace "in a world that is increasingly fractured and polarised.”

Elsewhere, Limerick's metropolitan district leader, Cllr Daniel Butler, has also condemned the arson attack on the Muslim place of worship.

The gardai and fire services were called to the Islamic Cultural Centre in Dooradoyle late on Thursday night following the incident.

Gardai are investigating what they described as an incident of "criminal damage by fire" at the premises.

It is understood a male approached the mosque and threw a petrol bomb through a window of the place of worship.

There's been widespread criticism of the attack, which is understood began in the bathroom of the facility.

Cllr Butler has described it as "a deeply disturbing and reckless act of violence" which has no place in Limerick.

“I am deeply shocked by this attack on a place of worship in our city. This was an extremely dangerous act that could easily have led to a tragic loss of life. I am relieved that no one was killed or seriously injured, but the fear and distress caused to the Muslim community cannot be underestimated," he said.
The Fine Gael councillor, who also represents Dooradoyle on the local authority added: "Acts of hatred or intimidation directed at any faith or community are utterly unacceptable. An attack on one place of worship is an attack on the fundamental values of respect, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence that we hold dear.”
He expressed his solidarity with the congregation of the Islamic Cultural Centre and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting all communities across the city.
“I want to make it clear to our Muslim neighbours that they are valued and respected members of our community. We stand with you. Everyone has the right to practice their faith in safety and without fear," said Cllr Butler.
He appealed for anyone with information regarding the incident to co-operate fully with investigating gardai.
And he called for unity in the face of division.
“Now more than ever, we must stand together as one community. Limerick is stronger when we reject hatred and choose solidarity, understanding, and mutual respect," the metropolitan leader concluded.
