BREAKING: Over 30 new gardaí to be assigned to Limerick stations

Minister of State Niall Collins confirmed the big increase in numbers in the Limerick Garda Division this Thursday night

BREAKING: Over 30 new gardaí to be assigned to Limerick stations

THERE is to be a major surge in garda numbers in Limerick, with over 30 additional members being assigned to local stations from the end of next week, confirmed Minister of State at the Department of Justice Niall Collins this Thursday night.

There will be a garda passing out ceremony in Templemore on Friday, February 6, where it is expected that around 170 trainees will attest.

Mr Collins said when the number of probationers due to attest, is taken with the number of experienced gardaí due to transfer to Limerick, local stations are due to receive in excess of 30 extra members of the force. Limerick Live understands it is expected to take place in the weeks following the passing out ceremony,

Mr Collins said: "Since coming into office last year the first priority of Government in the Department of Justice has been to get more gardaí out on our streets and into our communities.

"The over 30 additional gardaí for Limerick stations is hugely welcome for our communities right across county Limerick. Each one will be working to make our communities be and feel safe."

The Limerick County TD further highlighted investment in garda resources in Limerick.

"The most recent data available, from November, shows that there are 607 gardaí assigned to the Limerick Garda Division, which is a net increase of 25 since the beginning of last year and an increase of 53, which is about 10%, since 2015.

"The Garda Commissioner also assigned 30 probationer gardaí to Limerick during 2025, which is the highest annual allocation since 2020.

"There are 35 gardaí assigned to the garda roads policing unit, an increase of five since the start of last year, and there are 32 designated community gardaí, an increase of two since the start of last year.

"Additionally, we have 71 garda civilian staff assigned to the Limerick division, which is freeing up a huge amount of time and resources of sworn gardaí to be devoted to front-line policing."

Mr Collins concluded by saying the probationer gardaí, as has always been the case, will be assigned to Henry Street and Roxboro garda stations.

“This gives Limerick garda management increased policing capacity and resources at their disposal, allowing them to deploy these policing resources and gardaí to areas right around the county.

"The experienced gardaí that are transferring will be assigned to stations right around the county, meaning communities right across Limerick will see and feel the hard work being done by gardaí to keep them safe."
