INVESTIGATIONS are underway following a significant drugs seizure at Shannon Airport, earlier this week.

Revenue has confirmed that 15.63kg of herbal cannabis were seized on Tuesday, during routine operations at the airport.

"The illegal drugs, with an estimated value of €312,600 were discovered in a parcel originating from the USA," said a spokesperson who added that the parcel was destined for an address in the south of the country.

Revenue says the seizure, the latest to be made at Shannon Airport this year, forms part of its ongoing operations targeting the importation of illegal drugs.

"If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding drug smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on our confidential phone number 1800 295 295," they said.

It's understood the drugs seized at Shannon Airport will now be sent for forensic and technical analysis.

No further information is being disclosed publicly as investigations are ongoing.
