AN ANIMAL charity named a pug after the Limerick garda sergeant who helped rescue it from “a living nightmare”.

Footage has been widely shared on social media of the dog cowering in the pouring rain and curled up in a plant pot to try and stay warm and off the freezing and wet ground.

Limerick Live has learned the pug was rescued from a house in an estate in Newcastle West in recent days.

Animal charity My Lovely Horse Rescue posted on their Facebook page that the videos and photos they received left them in tears.

“How anyone could think this treatment of a little dog was acceptable is beyond us. We immediately contacted An Garda Síochána in Limerick and drove over three hours to meet them.

“We want to sincerely thank Sergeant Dave Callanan and his team. Their compassion and willingness to help were absolutely incredible.

“This little guy is now safe. We can’t say more at this time, but this innocent baby pug boy will never have to endure such cruelty again. He had simply existed - cold, wet most days, and freezing at night. A living nightmare.

"When we hugged him, his little tail started to wag, our hearts just burst,” posted the animal charity who decided to name the pug Dave after Sgt Callanan.

In a social media update, the charity said the pug is waking up in a warm bed and loving life just a few days after being rescued.

“No more searching for shelter. No more freezing through the night. No more being soaked, then having frost set into his coat. Moments like this make everything we do worthwhile, every bit of heartache, every worry, every tear.”

The charity said despite everything he’s been through, the dog still trusts, still loves, still hopes.

“He woke up in a warm bed, surrounded by love. This little guy is unbelievably sweet, all he wants is affection and comfort. We truly can’t get over how amazing he is.

“He will never endure neglect again. From here on out, it’s only a bright future for this precious little man.”

As well as praising the gardai involved in Newcastle West, My Lovely Horse Rescue also praised Dave’s foster family - Kerryanne, Jimmy, and Freya.
