Money sent back to Limerick woman who tried repeatedly to pay a speeding fine

The case came before Newcastle West District Court

A WOMAN who was caught driving 20km over the speed limit could not pay a fine because she didn’t have a licence and her money was posted back to her.

On March 30 of this year, the 45-year-old woman with an address in Croom, County Limerick, was stopped by gardaí for driving 80km in a 60km zone.

The court heard that she was forthcoming and said that she didn’t have a licence, that she’s never had a licence and was not insured. “I’m guilty”, she said.

She tried to pay the fine online and it could not be processed, then she sent money by post and it was sent back to her.

Because she does not have a licence, the penalty points could not be attached to a licence and the fine payment could not be processed and the payment was rejected.

Judge Karen Dowling accepted that there were difficult circumstances in the woman’s life and that she is caring for children and said: “that’s a first - money getting sent back.”

The woman told the court: “They were refusing my money - I tried.” The case was dismissed.
