Mayor to intervene amid concern over progress on new Limerick garda station

There have long been calls for a garda station in Castletroy

MAYOR John Moran has written to the Government to express his concern over the lack of a progress on a planned garda station for Castletroy.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris signed off on the funding for the facility for Limerick’s largest suburb almost two years ago.
The Office of Public Works (OPW) was then tasked with finding an appropriate site in the area.

However, since then, very little has happened.

At this month’s meeting of the full local authority, Mayor Moran shared the concern of Labour councillor Elena Secas, who sought an update on the plans.

Cllr Secas had told the mayor in a letter that she had written to the minister responsible for the OPW Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran on a number of occasions with no reply.

Off the back of this, Limerick’s first citizen has now written to Mr Moran himself.

He confirmed the news in a written answer to Cllr Secas, who represents the Castletroy area.

He added that he’s requested updates and information on the progress around the project.

“There is a strong community interest in this much-needed facility and I'm hoping the minister will provide an urgent response to the current status, next steps and any potential obstacles in progressing the garda station in Castletroy,” Mayor Moran wrote.

“You will note in my mayoral programme I have pushed to enhance safety with increased gardai and community wardens, tackling anti-social behaviour on the streets of our urban centres, towns and villages, and have specifically mentioned the garda station in Castletroy,” Mayor Moran added.

There have long been calls for a garda station in Castletroy.

Two years ago, more than 2,000 people signed a petition calling on Mr Harris to act.
