A MAN currently serving a custodial sentence was given a one-month jail sentence for stealing fuel at a filling station.

Detective Garda David Gee gave evidence of arresting and charging Calvin Moran, aged 24, of Long Pavement, Moyross with theft before Kilmallock Court. The detective garda said Mr Moran made no reply to the charge after caution.

Inspector Barry Manton, prosecuting, said the accused drove into O’Donovan’s filling station in Oola on July 27, 2023.

“He stole fuel to the value of €82.43,” said Insp Manton, who added that the defendant has a total of 70 previous convictions including 10 thefts.

Ted McCarthy, solicitor for Mr Moran, entered a guilty plea on behalf of his client.

“He received a prison sentence in August of last year. It terminates in May,” said Mr McCarthy.

The solicitor said his client had gone somewhat off the rails at the time of the offence.

“It was sparked by bouts of depression following the death of his nephew in tragic circumstances. He took tablets. He apologises. He has pleaded at the first available opportunity,” said Mr McCarthy.

Judge Patricia Harney imposed a one-month prison sentence.
