IT WAS, by any measure, a very good weekend for Limerick.
On Friday morning of last week, the kind of wild April rain that soaks through coats lashed down over Castleconnell, the starting point for this year’s Team Limerick Clean-up. Yet the weather did nothing to dampen spirits.
There were no long faces, no complaints - just smiles, chatter and an easy sense of camaraderie. Volunteers, organisers, media and public representatives stood shoulder to shoulder, proving that community pride runs far deeper than any downpour or divisions in the council chamber.

A record-breaking 24,000 volunteers took part in what is now Europe’s largest one-day clean-up.
That figure included 94 schools, 42 Tidy Towns groups and 48 sports clubs right across the city and county.
The timing could not have been better.
Just two days later, the city welcomed tens of thousands of visitors from Dublin, Clare and Cork for the league finals at TUS Gaelic Grounds. In the two weeks leading up to the games, there had been no shortage of noise - cribbing about ticket shortages, suggestions the matches belonged in Croke Park, even claims it was a “shambles” to host them in Limerick.
Yet the reality told a different story.
With an attendance of 41,678 fans in the 44,000-capacity stadium, the fixture felt just right and there seemed to be no real shortage of tickets in the end. Few sights match the swell of supporters streaming down the incline on Ennis Road towards the grounds.
It was a boost not just for spirits after what feels like the longest winter in history but for local businesses and the wider economy. Taken together, these two events at the weekend showcased a city and county operating at the top of its game.
And once again delivering.
