Celebrated local historian Dr Tadhg Moloney is citing a lease document around the use of buildings in the People's Park
A LOCAL historian thinks Limerick’s City Museum should relocate to the People’s Park in the city centre.
Currently the museum, named after the late Labour TD Jim Kemmy, is located in Henry Street at the former Franciscan’s Church.
But Dr Tadhg Moloney believes the Limerick City Gallery of Art should instead go there, with the museum moving up to the park.

He is citing a lease document, dated July 21, 1904, which states the original use of the building in People’s Park should be for a “public free library and a museum”.
Dr Moloney, pictured below, argues it was on this basis, the land was leased by the Earl of Limerick, with the lease lasting 400 years from 1904.

“I don’t believe the council is adhering to the agreement they made. This building should be returned to what its purpose was. It could revert back to the museum. The place they have at the Franciscan's, isn't fit for purpose. They show exhibitions below in the Franciscan’s. Why can't they move the art gallery down there?” he asked.
Dr Moloney believes putting the city museum in the People’s Park would be better for tourists visiting Limerick.
Asked if he expects the council to act upon his claims, the historian replied: “They should. The lease is still in existence.”
Limerick Live contacted Limerick City and County Council for comment on Dr Moloney’s claims, but did not receive a reply.
