Inspirational: Garda National Youth Awards recipients Terry Casey (left) and Cormac Downey
TWO YOUNG Limerick sports stars who have made real and positive differences in the lives of others have been honoured at the Garda National Youth Awards.
The ceremony at the Midlands Park Hotel, Portlaoise, on Saturday acknowledged the remarkable contributions of 25 recipients from across the country. The awards recognise exceptional young people aged 13 to 21 who have positively contributed to their community.

The Limerick Garda Division was well represented with Cormac Downey, Shanagolden who took home a special achievement award, while Southill’s Terry Casey received an individual award. Terry’s trophy is in safe hands as Chief Superintendent Derek Smart accepted the accolade on the jockey’s behalf (pictured below).

Assistant Commissioner for Roads Policing & Community Engagement, Catharina Gunne, opened the ceremony, while guest of honour Miriam O’Callaghan introduced each award category.
Assistant Commissioner Gunne said all of the nominees and award recipients are to be commended for their dedication and commitment.
"An Garda Síochána is delighted to be able to publically recognise their hard work, commitment and enthusiasm. Our communities are seeing the benefit of the contribution they are making. Each winner here today represents the very best of what young people in our communities can achieve. They are all inspirational.”
Citations on both young men give an insight into why they received the prestigious awards.
Cormac Downey
Cormac, of Munster Wheelchair Hurling, was nominated by David Fitzgerald.
Born with cerebral palsy, Cormac has confronted the challenges presented by this condition with remarkable resilience, courage, and determination.
From an early age, Cormac longed for independence and inclusion, and has grown into a confident, energetic, and driven teenager. He has embraced every opportunity, diving into sports and community activities with enthusiasm.
Cormac has been playing wheelchair hurling since he was ten years old and has raised vital funds and awareness for Munster Wheelchair Hurling by completing the Great Limerick Run - an extraordinary feat that highlights both his endurance and generosity. As captain, Cormac led the junior players to victory in the wheelchair hurling Fitzgerald Cup, inspiring younger teammates with his resilience and leadership.
Cormac has also recently made his rugby debut for Ireland in preparation for the 2026 Wheelchair Rugby League Cup. He has won three All-Ireland Medals for hurling and an individual achievement award this year for Munster Wheelchair Hurling.
Cormac’s warmth, positivity, and selfless drive make a lasting impact on his community. Cormac’s story inspires not just teammates, coaches, and supporters, but anyone who witnesses his journey. Even prominent figures in Irish sport, such as Limerick hurling manager John Kiely, reference him in motivational talks as a symbol of courage and perseverance.
Terry Casey
Terry, of Moyross Youth Diversion Project, was nominated by Andrew O’Byrne
Terry has made a profound contribution to his community by exemplifying dedication, resilience, and personal growth.
His inspiring journey began with the Moyross Youth Academy Equine Foundation Programme, an educational initiative that trains young people in the Moyross area of Limerick in how to handle horses, and introduce them to opportunities in the equine industry.
What started as an introduction to horses through this local initiative led to Terry fulfilling his dream of achieving a place in the Racing Academy and Centre of Education (RACE).
This has now evolved into a remarkable career for Terry as a professional jockey. His is a journey that has inspired countless young people and instilled deep pride within his community.
Terry’s story stands as a testament to what can be achieved through hard work, community support, and belief in oneself, bringing immense pride to his family, community, and the Moyross Youth Academy.
