THE festive season is well and truly underway in Limerick city centre with a host of events taking place over the next three weeks.

The Christmas red carpet will be rolled out for the younger ones as a range of magical festivities get underway, much of it revolving around the launch of Santa’s Magic Post Box and other free events on Bedford Row this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 9-11.

The special venue is expected to welcome large numbers of children as they arrive to dispatch the most important letter of the year.

While there, children can also enjoy carousel rides with festive music and street performers to add to the Christmas spirit.

Santa’s Magic Post Box has been designed by FABLAB in Limerick, who have made all the festive installations for Limerick this year.

Children are also being asked to bring along an unwrapped toy for the St Vincent De Paul Christmas appeal.

The Hunt Museum will be hosting ‘The Magic of Christmas’ from Thursday  December 8 – Sunday  December 11.

The event will officially launch this Thursday at 15:00 when Santa will be arriving with his elves via boat to meet and greet the public, at 15:45 he will make his way to the courtyard, where he will be joined by a children’s choir and face painters at the front of the museum to turn on the Christmas tree lights.

The evening will also mark the beginning of our Christmas food and craft fair which will host a number of local Limerick food makers and craft makers. The fair will operate on Thursday  from 3pm – 9pm, Friday form  4pm – 9pm, Saturday, from 11am – 6pm and Sunday from  11am – 6pm.

Along with the Christmas fair the museum  will be hosting live music at the riverside throughout the weekend that will feature retro gospel fusion, the homeless choir, trad music and a carolling competition to take place on Saturday.

In addition to this the garden will also be host to our live crib on Friday and Saturday, to help bring the nativity to life.

The Hunt Museum will also be collaborating with the city in Bedford Row where they will be facilitating a Christmas lantern making workshop on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th December.

On Sunday, Dowtcha Puppet Theatre will be in the museum to deliver the classic puppet show of Punch and Judy in the Museums Captains’ Room.

The Hunt Café will be hosting a gingerbread making competition, where the public are invited to submit entries and the winner will receive a cash prize of €100.

The Hunt Museum has also partnered with Nevsail to offer adventure sports throughout the weekend such as archery, kayaking and a climbing wall. Contact Nevsail directly on 086 330 8236 for details or to book.

There is free parking in the city centre, Newcastle West, Abbeyfeale and Kilmallock every day until 11.30am up to Christmas Eve with free parking always on Sundays.
