A LOCAL medical research firm has broken ground on a major extension of its facility in Croom.
Work has begun on a significant expansion of Croom Medical, the largest single investment the company has made in its 42 year history.
The firm says it marks a significant milestone for its work using modern technology to design and make medical parts supporting or replacing bones and joints.

Its development will see a purpose-built 38,000 square foot facility on the edge of Croom.
It will not only add manufacturing capacity, but also establish a research and development centre of excellence.
It’s anticipated the building will integrate the full spectrum of designing and producing medical devices that support, repair, or replace bones and joints.
For companies which partner with Croom Medical, the facility will ensure there is deeper integration through the full product lifecycle - from early stage design and prototyping through to production.
Croom Medical says the centre is designed around the direction in which the orthopaedic industry is heading: cementless fixation, robotic-assisted surgery, and additive manufacturing at scale.
Croom Medical was founded by Paddy Byrnes in 1984 as a small precision engineering firm.
Since then, it has grown into a global manufacturing partner for leading medtech companies and is one of Croom’s largest employers - there are 150 people working in the centre.
Over that period, Croom Medical has invested more than €12m in advanced technologies.
Chief executive of Croom Medical Patrick Byrnes said: “This is a strategic investment designed around where this industry is going next. For our partners, it means deeper integration, advanced capability, and a facility built around their road maps. At the same time, it creates high-value roles and long-term career opportunities here in Croom, strengthening the local economy and the community that has supported us for over four decades.
“This facility was built on the trust our partners place in our team, and we’re proud that our growth benefits both our global customers and the town of Croom.”
Construction of the centre is under way with completion expected by the end of the year.
Once operational, the facility will play a central role in supporting Ireland’s Mid-West medtech ecosystem while reinforcing Croom Medical’s position as a full-service orthopaedic manufacturing partner.
