ANOTHER blow to Limerick’s retail sector is looming, with fashion accessories chain Claire’s set to close its store in the Crescent Shopping Centre.

Claire's is being put into administration, RTÉ has reported after their owner said "last-ditch" measures had fallen through.

This means 1,355 employees in the UK and Ireland at 154 Claire's shops will be put at risk.

A spokesperson for Modella Capital said:
"Very sadly, we have had to initiate insolvency proceedings for Claire's Accessories UK & Ireland. This has been a very tough decision... Administration is the only option."
"The climate on the high street remains extremely challenging, and Claire's is not alone in experiencing difficulties. This is borne out by recent Sensormatic statistics and other data sources suggesting an alarming drop-off in pre-Christmas footfall. A combination of very weak consumer confidence, highly adverse government fiscal policies and continued cost inflation is causing many established and much-loved businesses to suffer badly. It’s a simple fact that if retailers can’t make money, they risk having to close – and jobs across the country are lost."

Claire's called in administrators for its UK and Ireland operations in September 2024 after filing for bankruptcy in the United States. Investment firm Modella Capital bought the majority of the company's operations and assets from administrators.

Claire's on Cruises St in the city centre closed last October but their store in the Crescent Shopping Centre had continued trading.
