GENERAL Motors has confirmed that its plan to shed 1,000 staff from its global workforce will impact its operations in Ireland.
The automotive firm has offices in both Limerick and Galway.
Locally, it’s understood that close to 200 people are employed at the National Technology Park in Plassey.
These staff work in the information technology sector.
A spokesperson for the firm confirmed roles will be impacted in Ireland.
“We are going through the collective consultation process right now, so it will be difficult for us to share exact impact on our sites in Ireland before that process is over,” they added.
A spokesperson for the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment also confirmed it had received communication from General Motors indicating it planned to cut jobs in Ireland, but declined to comment further.

In a statement on its global job losses - mostly concentrated in the area of Detroit where General Motors was founded - a company spokesperson added: “As we build GM’s future, we must simplify for speed and excellence, make bold choices, and prioritise the investments that will have the greatest impact. As a result, we’re reducing certain teams within the software and services organisation.”
General Motors arrived in Limerick back in 2013, initially renting space on the top floor of the council’s building in Dooradoyle.
