Limerick Athletics - Weekly News Update

Dooneen AC Ladies squad who returned to the National Indoor League with a new generation of athletes after an 11-year absence

National League

DOONEEN AC’s young women made a powerful statement in Round 1 of the National League, producing a series of determined performances against Ireland’s leading clubs.

Standout contributions came across the board, highlighted by strong individual performances from Destiny Lawal, Isbéal Ní
Huigín, Leah Moloney, Amie McMahon, Ella Grace Osborne, Megan O’Shea and Éanna Ní Huigín, and a composed, high-impact 4x400m relay from Niamh Hynes, Sophia Meaney, Vivian Amazee and Meabh Purtill that delivered when it mattered most.

The late surge saw Dooneen climb the standings rounding off an excellent day. After the opening round, Dooneen
AC sit fifth of 15 teams, with Round 2 taking place on February 8 at the Athlone Indoor Arena.

Around the Country

Several West Limerick athletes made the relatively short trip to Tralee for the Kerins O’Rahilly 10K and it was certainly worthwhile because Declan Guina won in a time of 33:5.

Actually West Limerick occupied four of the top five places with John Fitzgerald second in 35:16, Padraig O’Donnell fourth in 35:20 and Karl Lenihan fifth in 35:36.

Dooneen’s Anthony Harty crossed the line in a time of 41:13.

Galway Indoors

Congratulations to Kieran O’Connor, of West Limerick AC, who claimed gold in the U20 60m at the Galway Indoors last weekend. A brilliant start to 2026 for Kieran, who is showing superb early-season form.

Parkrun

Congratulations to Limerick Parkrun which celebrated its 10th birthday at the University of Limerick last Saturday.

While it’s ethos is non-competitive it has facilitated a large number of club runners over many years.

Shona Keane was first Woman in 19:33 with John Whitaker in 19:38 with Limerick AC’s Neil O’Connail producing a year’s best of 21:19.

Londis Adare 10k Transfer Window

The transfer window for the 2026 Adare 10k will be closing on January 31. Those wishing to sell or buy a transfer can do so utilising the comments section beneath the 'Transfer Window' post from January 15 on the Londis Adare 10k Facebook page.

West Limerick AC will not be involved in transfers; this is between the buyer and seller to organise.

International

Sarah Lavin has delivered World Indoor Championships Qualification after powering to a brilliant second-place finish in the Women’s 60m Hurdles Final at the Meeting de Paris on Sunday afternoon. The Emerald AC athlete clocked a time of 7.98.

Fixtures

The fifth edition of the Michal Rejmer 10 Mile Road race, hosted by Dooneen AC, takes place on Sunday, March 29, T-Shirts only for the first 250 entries! Enter through Eventmaster, to volunteer on the day, contact the club!

The second race in the Run Limerick Series takes place next weekend, this time a 10K in Castleconnell, 9am, register through.

The Tokyo Marathon takes places on 27 th February with some local athletes in training.

The Rome Marathon is on March 22.

The Boston Marathon takes place on April 20 and Limerick’s Ava Crean will be amongst the elite field. She was also named the prestigious ‘Her Sport’ Sports Personality of 2025! Well done Ava.
