Eileen Reeves, of Doooneen AC, has completed an impressive 43 marathons as well as two ultra marathons to date
KAREN Raine: “Eileen you’re one of the most recognisable figures in Limerick running, how did you first get into running?
Eileen Reeves: “Thank you, that is very complimentary. I started running with my brothers who were training for rugby matches with Old Crescent.”
Where did it all start?
“In the fields on Childers Road where they trained.”
And how did you end up with Dooneen AC?
“I went for a training session on the track in UL Dave Cowhey and Joe Chawke were the coaches. Everyone was very welcoming.”

And what do you enjoy most about running?
“The social aspect and the fitness. The track on a Tuesday night with Joe Chawke, Parkruns on a Saturday, plus Karl Daly’s ‘River Runs’ on the first Friday of every month.”
What motivates you to keep running?
“Family, partner and fellow runners. Morning runs with friends.”
How many marathons have you run?
“43 marathons plus two ‘ultras’”
And tell us about some of your favourite ones?
“The Limerick marathon is the best. Home run, fantastic support from Dooneen AC members who volunteer every year. The crowds who come to cheer us on. Limerick supporters are incredible.
“I also loved London, New York and Paris Marathons- Very happy experiences.”
So would the marathon be your favourite distance?
“Yes, though, All distances are enjoyable.”
What would be your favourite event and why?
“The Michal Rejmer 10 mile’ run organised by very dedicated Dooneen AC club members. It’s a fabulous course in Patrickwell, open to all levels with a fine spread of food afterwards.”
What has been the highlight of your running career?
“Doing the London Marathon in aid of Milford Hospice who did so much to look after my late sister Grace.”
You’ve achieved a lot in running, but have you remaining ambitions ?
“To complete the seven Marathon Majors. Two down, just five to go!”
You’ve done pacing?
“Yes, both for the Michal Raymer 10-mile, (1 hour 40 minutes) and I will be the one one hour pacer for the Tom Walsh 10K in January 2026.”
And you are involved in race organisation?
“Yes I’ve been on the Committee for the Michael Rejmer 10 Mile and also been Run Director for Limerick Parkrun at UL a dozen or so times.”
If you were president of Athletics Ireland or World Athletics for a day what changes would make?
“Nominate Sonia Sullivan as my advisor!”
Anything that you think would improve athletics?
“To see volunteer coaches getting more recognition.”
