MUNSTER SCHOOLS TRACK AND FIELD
TAKING place in Templemore some athletes were new to provincial action at the Munster Schools Track and Field Championships, while others were more seasoned and with All-Ireland aspirations.
Many medals travelled home to Limerick. Well done to everyone.
Best performers included Leagh Moloney, of Gaelcholaiste Luimnigh, who won the Senior Triple Jump and took Silver in the 100mh. Fellow ‘Clare St’ student Rosie Gavin was 2nd in the Senior 100m (12.52) with Orla O’Shaughnessy, of Salesians, close behind (12.54) in 3rd.
For Castletroy Double All Ireland Champion Darragh Whelan was 2nd in the Junior 800m with Aaron O’Connor winning the Senior Triple Jump in 12.80M. Lamine Diarrasouba took Gold in the Senior Boys 400m. The school were 2nd in the 4x100m Inter Boys Relays.
For Crescent College Comprehensive, Megan O’Shea was second in the Junior hurdles with Ellen Goggin 3rd in the Junior Hurdles. Alan McCutcheon of Crescent Comprehensive secured a 30 second pb on his way to 4th place in the Senior 5000m (16:45). As well as attending the Dooradoyle based school all 3 also line out, on ‘other days’ for Dooneen.
Luke Calitz, of St Munchin's College, and Limerick AC was 2nd in the 200m and 3rd in the 100m.
Alex Colling, of CII Abbeyfeale, took the Gold in the Junior Boys Triple Jump. Schoolmate Oisin O’Regan was 2nd in the Senior 400mh while Aoibhinn Harte,also Abbeyfeale was 3rd in the Senior Discus.
Gyte Andrijauskatie, of Mungret Community College, was 3rd in the Junior Girls Javelin.
Eimear Galvin, of Hazelwood, Dromcollogher, took Senior Long Jump Bronze.
Roisin Doyle, of Laurel Hill, was 3rd in the Junior 100m
The top three in field events, in distances 800m or longer and the top two in Sprints qualified for the All-Ireland finals on May 31 in Athlone.
BUTTEVANT 4-MILE
Several Limerick athletes made the short trip to North Cork for this popular event. Best performer was Karl Lenihan 3rd overall in 21:07. The Kilmallock duo of Donie Dwane (26:24) and Tony McMahon (27:46) also ran. Gareth Cox (Dooneen )33:43
WELL DONE
Well done to John Kinsella and the Irish Mountain Running team who held a 2-mile Jog/walk lap of honour followed by a training session in John’s native Southill last Sunday.
It was in memory of those who have passed away many of whom John grew up with. John will represent Ireland in the European Mountain running championships Annecy France at the end of this month.
AROUND THE COUNTRY
Ide Nic Domnaill won the Aisling Murphy 4-Mile in a time of 21:15, her mother Carmel finished in 36 mins.
Grace O’Donnell travelled to the Phoenix Park and posted an excellent time of 21:11.
FIXTURES
The Kilmallock AC 4 Mile Road race, in memory of the late Zac Bishop takes place this Friday, May 24 at 7:30pm, entries are open on Eventmaster or on the night. Can anyone topple Declan Moore who has monopolised these races in recent times?
Pamela Kirby and Caroline Goddard will be amongst those expected to challenge for the Women’s title.
The 21st Annual Ger Mullane 10k & 5k Road Race & Walk hosted by Bilboa AC takes place on Friday June 14th 2024. Entries are now open on Eventmaster.
Next weekend also sees the Munster U9-U11 Combined Events, U20/U23 Senior and Masters T&F Championships Day 2 in Templemore
