Limerick Juvenile Track and Field Championships
HISTORY was made as the first County Championships were held at the Regional Athletics facility in Newcastle West for the first time with the staging of the Limerick Juvenile Track and Field Championships.
Glorious sunshine added to the occasion although it can be a mixed blessing for athletes.
Some selected results included:
For Kilmallock, Leah Kinnane and Max Goodchild were Gold medallists in Girls and Boys U9 Turbo Javelin events. Clubmate Marie McCarthy won Gold in the U14 100m, 200m and Long Jump with a PB of 4.1m.
Noah Meyer took Gold in the U15 100m and 200m. Ronan Collins was 1st in the U16 100mh and 2nd in the Long Jump.
Kilmallock Junior Boys also won the Relay.
Daire O’Dwyer, of An Bru, had one of the heaviest pockets going home as he took gold in the U15 Shot Put, Long Jump and 200m plus Silver in the 800m and was part of the An Bru Boys team which came 2nd in the Relay.
Clubmate Lauren Prendergast was 2nd in the Girls U13 Shot Put.
For the hosts, West Limerick Roisin O’Donoghue won Gold in the U13 Shot Put. Joseph Carr won Gold in the U14 400mh and Bronze in the 800m. Elisa Fahy won the U11 600m with Liam O’Connor taking the U9 Turbo Javelin.
Darragh Whelan won the U14 800m for Limerick AC with clubmates Sarah O’Halloran winning the Junior 400m and Aoife Murphy taking Junior 100mm and 200m titles.
Laura Kennedy took U9 300m for St Marys in Rathkeale, while Eimear Galvin won the Junior 400mh.
Dooneen’s Mattie Cregan won the U10 500m, Jay Collins took the U14 200m for Boys while Ellen Goggin followed up her provincial 800m victory with a County U15 800m win here.
Recent Irish ‘cap’ Ella Grace Osborne won the U16 800m.
Jayden O’Riordan won the U16 Boys 400m for Bilboa.
Well done to all athletes, coaches parent’s and anyone who else who contributed to the day. Thanks to West Limerick AC for being excellent hosts.
North Munster Schools Track and Field Championships, Castleisland
Emer Purtill, of Mungret, and Dooneen broke the Junior Girls Shot Put record with a throw of 13.23m, the existing record of 12.94m having stood since 2017. This is Emer’s 6th Schools record, also holding records for ‘Combined events, Javelin and High Jump’.
Robert McCutcheon, of Crescent College Comprehensive, set a new record in winning the Minor Boys Javelin in 32.41m. Schoolmate and Dooneen Clubmate Ellen Goggin won the Junior Girls 800m.
Destiny Lawal won the Junior Girls 100m and Isobel Ni Huigin (Laurel Hill) won the Junior 200m.
Double All-Ireland champion Darragh Whelan added another gong taking Gold in the Junior800m while his sister Amy was 4th in the 1500m, both Castletroy College.
Colaiste Chiaran Crooom won the Boys 4x100m Relay. Sizothini Ndholovu, of St Clements, had a double in winning the Intermediate Boys 100 and 200m. Rosie Gavin of Gaelcholaist Luimnigh won the Senior Girls 100m in 12.91 secs with Leagh Moloney Triple Jump winner.
Michael Curly Cunningham 4-Mile, Galbally
A legendary Limerick athlete was remembered last Friday night. Declan Moore followed up victory in the Great Limerick Run with another ‘gong’ here, crossing the line first in 19:57. Gavin Sheehy of Togher was next in 20:23 with Karl Lenihan of West Limerick taking the Bronze Medal in 20:57.
Dymphna Ryan was second lady in 22:54, Bilboa’s Pamela Kirby was 4th in 24:57, just 4 seconds off a podium spot but did win the F40 top prize. Also Donie Dwane, Kilmallock 26:38, Marie Wright 30:05.

The Kilmallock AC 4 Mile Road race takes place on Friday 24 th May at 7:30pm, entries now open on Eventmaster or on the night.
Bilboa host the 21st Annual Ger Mullane 10k & 5k Road Race & Walk on Friday June 14. Entries are now open on Eventmaster.
