Disabled men urged to audition for award-winning play set to run at four Irish theatres

Men with physical impairments are invited to audition for the role of a disabled activist in an award-winning play set to run at theatres in four counties.

Inspired by the life of wheelchair-user and Galway native Martin Naughton, 'No Magic Pill' broke new ground when it first debuted at the Black Box Theatre in 2022 for its casting of disabled actors.

'No Magic Pill' tells the heartfelt, hilarious and stereotype-shattering story of Naughton's - who passed away in 2016 - anarchic quest for both justice and love as a leader of the disability rights movement in Ireland.

The play - which won the Audience Choice Award at the Irish Times Irish Theatre Awards - is funded by the Arts Council and is presented in association with Independent Living Movement Ireland, the Irish Wheelchair Association and the Disability Federation of Ireland.

Disabled men over the age of 30 with or without acting experience are encouraged to audition for the role of Naughton by sending a CV or letter outlining their experience to casting@nomagicpill.ie

The deadline for expressions of interest is Thursday, May 23.

Selected candidates will be invited to attend an audition on Wednesday June 5 at the Independent Living Movement Ireland (ILMI) office, Carmichael House, North Brunswick Street, Dublin 7.

Rehearsals will begin in October before going on tour from November 7-23 across four venues in Ireland, including the Black Box Theatre in Co Galway, Backstage Theatre in Co Longford, glór in Ennis, Co Clare and The Civic in Tallaght, Co Dublin.
