Memories – 40 years – Ninety new jobs for Limerick firm


ESSILOR Ireland Ltd, a subsidiary of Essilor International of Paris, France, is to expand its operations at Limerick, introducing a completely new technology to the country and adding 90 new jobs by the end of 1977.

Essilor, ranked first in Europe and fourth in the world in the ophthalmic optics field, established Essilor Ireland Ltd, at Raheen Industrial Estate, just outside Limerick city, less than two years ago,

The Limerick operation has so far been engaged in the production of ophthalmic progressive power lenses. This product is marketed internationally under the trade name of Varilux 11.Essilor International has now decided to add production of organic lenses to its Limerick operations and this will involve movement to expanded premises and recruitment of fifty new staff prior to production start up scheduled for September 1.

Essilor International which had sales of £52 million last year originated mass production of organic lenses and had the biggest organic lens production plant in the world at Dijon, France. The company  employs 5,00 people. Essilor will bring its investment in Limerick to £15 million by moving to a new 34,000 sq.ft. premises  in Raheen.
