Famous O’Malley clan to descend on Limerick for annual gathering

O’Malley Chieftain Nano O’Malley-McMahon from Cappamore

VISITORS are set to come to Limerick from across the world this weekend as one of the globe’s most famous family clans hold their annual gathering.

Members of the O’Malley Clan from the USA, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Poland, Thailand and Ireland will spend time in Cappamore, Bunratty, Ardnacrusha and the city as they gather for their annual shindig.

It’s being held here in Limerick due to the fact the clan’s current chieftain Nano O’Malley-McMahon hails from Cappamore.
And the weekend festivities bring the curtain down her one-year term in office.

It all kicks off at Tineteriffe National School at 2pm on Friday, where an Olympics for O’Malley youngsters will be held.
Then it’s onto Hayes Bar in the town, for a whiskey and gin reception.

Here, a 60-page book is to be launched focused on the famous O’Malleys in history.

A charity gala concert takes place at Abington Church, before it’s back to Hayes’s again for some dance lessons and an Irish music session!

Ardnacrusha is the venue for the start of day two of the weekend, with a historical tour of the ESB station taking place.

The O’Malley link here is that the engineer who created the station Thomas McLoughlin was married to an Olwyn O’Malley.
She was sister to former Education Minister Donogh O’Malley.

Then to Limerick city centre, there’s a tour of Treaty Brewery at Nicholas Street, organised by Mike McMahon, Mother Mac’s.

On Saturday night, O’Malleys in full regalia will gather at Bunratty Castle for a banquet.

The following morning, Mass will take place at St Munchin’s Church, opposite the Treaty Stone. Lunch will then be taken in the Strand Hotel.

Then, on the top floor of the hotel overlooking the river Shannon, the next O’Malley clan chieftain will be inaugurated - Grace O’Malley from the fair city of Dublin.
