Memories – 10 years – Earl on 'insult' over park block

Council

THE Earl of Limerick has described the five-storey apartment block overlooking the People’s Park as “a blight” and “an insult” to users of the award winning park.

Edmund Pery, the 7th Early, expressed his “deep regret” over the construction of the new building on the site.”

His comments come following a recent meeting in Dubai with Minister for State, Tim O’Malley, who has been a vocal critic of the development and has sent a detailed list of questions on the matter to Enviornment Minister, Dick Roche.

The blocks stands in part on land donated to the people of Limerick by the third early in 1877. The land in question was acquired by Limerick City Council from the Earl’s estate and park trustees for €150,000 in late 2003 and disposed of to Reidy Civil Engineering for €1.57 million.
