BREAKING: Joyous scenes as Cllr Seán Hartigan, GP, fills second last seat in Limerick City East

Cllr Hartigan was the only Green member to enter the race in city east and was ‘quietly confident’

GREEN Party councillor Seán Hartigan has retained his seat in Limerick City and County Council.

755 people living in the Limerick City East area gave their number one for Cllr Hartigan, followed closely by that of Cllr Michael Murphy who got 738 votes.

However, as time ticked on, Cllr Murphy got eliminated from the race, leaving Cllr Hartigan to swoop in and take the sixth seat in Limerick City East.

He ended up with 1,390 at the final count and was elected without making quota, along with Sinn Fein newcomer Ursula Gavan.

He said upon being elected: “I was quietly confident for the last couple of hours but I am delighted and very much looking forward to working with the new Mayor.

“I am looking forward to being a voice for nature and the environment and that was my main motivation for pushing myself.

“I think if there wasn’t a Green on Limerick City and County Council, a lot of things wouldn’t happen and I hope to be a voice for biodiversity, as well as a voice for people.”

Cllr Hartigan got fewer votes in this election than last time, as he made the quota in 2019 with 1,094 votes and was elected straight off the bat.

The process of elimination means that Cllr Hartigan survives another day in Limerick City and County Council.
