WATCH: Head Coach at Swim Ireland's National Centre in Limerick John Szaranek previews European Championships

Seven Limerick-based swimmers will represent Ireland at the short-course championships in Poland this week

JOHN Szaranek is Head Coach at Swim Ireland's National Centre in Limerick which is based at UL.

Scottish-born Szaranek has enjoyed an outstanding impact on Irish swimming in 2025, guiding a significant numner of athletes to unprecedented international success.

Szaranek oversaw 14 international medals, 16 Irish records and more than 30 international final or semi-final appearances across junior, U23, senior, and para events this year.

Standout performances included John Shortt’s double World Junior titles, Ellie McCartney’s European U23 medal haul, and Róisín Ní Riain’s five medals at the World Para Swimming Championships.

Szaranek is also a coach with the Ireland team competing at the European Aquatics Championships (25m) in Poland this week.

Seven swimmers based at University of Limerick will represent Ireland at the championships which begin today, Tuesday, and continue until this weekend.

Szaranek was recently short-listed for a 2025 Team Ireland Olympic Sport Award, a landmark celebration recognising the standout performances, moments, and achievements from across the Irish Olympic community in 2025.

The Scottish coach has been nominated in the Coach of the Year category with the winners abnnounced on Saturday.
