Cotter has had an interesting career since making his Limerick FC debut back in 2017

FORMER Limerick FC defender Barry Cotter has joined Bulgarian giants CSKA Sofia on a three-year-deal it has been announced.

Cotter, who has left League of Ireland club Derry City to join CSKA, played 11 times for Limerick FC before moving to Ipswich Town in 2018.

The Ennis native joined Limerick as a youngster in 2015, before making his breakthrough to the senior team two years later.

Although only making less than a dozen appearances, he did enough to earn that high profile move to Ipswich who were then managed by Mick McCarthy.

The former Ireland captain and manager famously left Ipswich after his substituting of Cotter on his debut was met by an angry crowd reaction.

Cotter’s time at Ipswich was a frustrating one that yielded a loan at non-league Chelmsford before not being offered a new contract at Portman Road following the end of his contract.

A subsequent move to Shamrock Rovers didn’t work out for Cotter but a short trip across Dublin to St Patrick’s Athletic saw the right back return to form.

A transfer to EFL League 1 Barnsley was next for Cotter in January 2023. He spent two years at Oakwell before a loan move to Notts County for the 2025/26 season but that was cut short to allow Cotter move to Derry last February.

Cotter’s good form for the Candystrikes in the SSE Aritricity League Premier Division and in Europe paved the way for his latest move to one of Bulgaria’s biggest clubs.
