GEAROID Hegarty has been named the GAA/GPA Hurler of the Year - becoming the second Limerick man to win the award twice in the process.

Six years after first claiming the gong, the St Patrick’s clubman took the sport’s highest individual honour for the second time at the All-Stars ceremony in Dublin on Friday night.

He beat out Treaty teammate Diarmaid Byrnes and Brian Hayes of Cork in the voting for the award. Hegarty also won his fifth All-Star on the night.

Previously Cian Lynch won the Hurler of the Year in 2018 and 2021, Byrnes and Aaron Gillane are the other winners of the prize which was introduced in 1995.

Kyle Hayes, Sean Finn and Barry Nash have previously been nominated for the award.

It caps off a wonderful inter-county campaign for Hegarty who was part of the all-conquering Shannonsiders who won the Munster League, Allianz League, Munster Championship and the All-Ireland Championship when they beat Galway in July.
