JOHN the Baptist Community School, Hospital are out of the Dr Harty Cup following a 3-19 to 0-16 loss to St Flannan’s at TUS Moylish.
The Limerick school were always up against it against one of the competition favourites and last season's beaten finalists.
Hospital are now out of the competition ahead of their final round tie against Our Lady’s, Templemore.
Despite a late burst to close the opening half, John the Baptist still trailed by a goal and would see the contest run away from them as Luke Vaughan and Riain O’Donnell buried quickfire goals at the three-quarter mark. The Ennis nursery are assured of a knockout spot, ahead of their final round tie.
John the Baptist led early on through Seán O’Dwyer, before Christian Higgins (free) restored that advantage after eight minutes. However, once Flannan’s inched 0-3 to 0-2 ahead, they wouldn’t be caught.
Starman Graham Ball was influential, while Donnacha Mahon and Vaughan both pointed. Their first goal came from Eire Óg’s Vaughan on 16 minutes.
They added the next four points to flex their muscle. Credit to John the Baptist, however, who scored each of the final five points of the half to bring the scoreboard back to 1-9 to 0-9.
Sub Jason Ryan made an immediate impact when introduced, while Higgins (two frees), Seán O’Dwyer and Michael Hanly also split the posts.
It was back to two points early in the second half, but that was as good as it got. Flannan’s hit another gear to move well clear.
They scored 2-6 without reply, including well-worked goals finished by Vaughan and O’Donnell. In this strong spell of dominance, came three points in the blink of an eye, from sub Ben Talty.
The gap was out to fourteen with still around fifteen minutes to play. John the Baptist, to their credit, finished with energy and found a way to outscore their opposition in the closing period.
Colm Cleary pointed from the left wing, while John O’Riordan capped a decent showing by bringing his tally to five points as Flannan’s strolled to victory.
John the Baptist will have to try to raise their spirit ahead of a clash with Our Lady’s Templemore in their final group outing – with both sides already out of the running in this season's edition.
