Black ice warning in Limerick: motorists warned to exercise care

Salting of roads will take place from 10pm this Monday night

MOTORISTS have been warned to exercise care after Limerick City and County Council issued a black ice warning.

Priority one and two roads across the county are to be salted at 10 o'clock this Monday evening.

It comes in advance of road surface temperatures falling below freezing between 2am and 10am on Tuesday.

Details of roads which will be treated by council staff can be found here

As result of the heavy rain over the weekend and this Monday there are locations where surface waters are flowing from land onto treated and untreated roads.

Council has said there is a risk of black ice on some roads in Limerick on Tuesday morning.

Black ice is a very thin layer of ice that can form on roads, bridges and lakes.

It is not actually black in colour; instead it is transparent.

This means the colour of the ice is actually just the pavement surface.

As a result, that makes black ice extremely hard to see, which can lead to accidents.
