There is a severe risk of flooding amid heavy rain in six counties, according to the latest weather forecasts.

Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel has issued an unofficial Status Orange rainfall warning for mountainous areas of Waterford commencing on Tuesday afternoon and persisting until the early afternoon on Wednesday.

He also issued a Status Yellow rainfall warning for counties Cork, Wexford, Wicklow, Kilkenny and Carlow for heavy falls of rain and localised spot flooding in these areas.

"The heaviest rain will be across the Comeragh, Knockmeldown, Blackstairs and Wicklow Mountains with rainfall totals generally of up to 50-60mm, however possibly up to 70mm of rainfall is possible over the Comeraghs.

"Elsewhere, rainfall totals for the 24 hours between midday Tuesday and midday on Wednesday will generally range between 25-40mm, heaviest across the south and southeast coastal counties.

"Some localised flooding is possible as result of this rainfall, with difficult driving conditions also expected with motorists advised to take a little extra time for any journeys and watch out for surface spray," he added.

Met Éireann has not issued any official weather warnings as of yet but their latest forecast does predict heavy rainfall.

They say Tuesday will start "mostly cloudy with patches of mist and drizzle. Later in the morning, rain will move into the south and will spread northwards across the country during the afternoon and evening. The rain will be heavy at times, particularly in the south and east. Mild and humid with highest temperatures of 14 to 16 degrees, in a light to moderate southeasterly wind, occasionally fresh and gusty later."

They add that Tuesday night "will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, heavy for a time in the northeast and east with a chance of isolated thunderstorms. There will be hill and coastal mist and fog too. Mild and humid with lowest temperatures of 11 to 14 degrees, in a light to moderate southeasterly wind, occasionally fresh and gusty early in the night.

"Wednesday morning will be mostly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain. This will linger in parts of the north and east through the day, but there will be a clearance to sunny spells and some showers across the south and west. Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees with light to moderate southerly winds."

Met Éireann's general outlook for the week states: "Generally unsettled with wet and breezy weather at times. Mild with temperatures staying above the October average."
