Ireland weather forecast latest amid heatwave flop and shock summer prediction

Weather forecasters have veered away from their glorious heatwave forecasts of last week and replaced them with far more typically Irish weather.

Cathal Nolan from Ireland's Weather Channel described the weather outlook for Ireland as "terribly disappointing" after a couple of fine summer days.

Temperatures hit the low 20s on Sunday and Monday but the further outlook dampens any hopes of a real kickstart to our summer with the possibility of some grass frost.

Cathal said: "Once the current warmer temperatures break on Thursday, Ireland will find itself again under the influence of a cooler Atlantic airmass as west to northwest winds feed in cooler air across the country.

"This cooler air will see temperatures dropping below average for this time of year, with daily minimum values no better than 14-16 degrees Celsius generally, with a risk of grass frost at night as temperatures drop to low single figures.

"With high pressure across the Azores and a ridge of high pressure extending north eastwards there won’t be much in the way of rain, but rather simply disappointing summer conditions with plenty of cloud about and limited sunshine.

"All in all, it’s terribly disappointing conditions," he concluded.

Met Éireann have said the outlook is rather "changeable with occasional spells of rain mixed with dry and bright periods. Quite warm at first but turning fresher and a bit cooler for a time later in the week."

Their forecast for the week reads: "Generally cloudy to begin on Tuesday with patchy light rain and drizzle slowly moving eastwards, and just limited bright or sunny intervals. Drier, brighter and sunnier conditions will gradually extend from the west through the afternoon and evening. Highest temperatures of 16 to 21 degrees, coolest along northern and northwestern coasts, in a light northerly breeze.

"Patchy rain and drizzle in the east will clear into the Irish Sea early in the night [Tuesday] and it will turn dry then with clear spells. A few mist or fog patches will form. Lowest temperatures generally of 7 to 11 degrees, in a very light southeast or variable breeze.

"A generally dry start with sunny spells [on Wednesday]. Showery outbreaks of rain will develop during the day especially in parts of the north and west. The southeast may stay dry. Cloud cover will vary in the afternoon. Another warm day with highest temperatures of 19 to 23 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds, freshening along the west coast.

"Thursday will see showery outbreaks of rain push in from the west, though the midlands and southeast will see a lot of dry weather. It'll be breezy in the northwest too, with moderate westerly winds elsewhere. A cooler fresher day with highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees.

"During Friday scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle will gradually die out and it will become dry with variable cloud. Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees."

The Met Éireann outlook into the weekend predicts "patchy drizzle in places on Saturday but good dry periods too. Winds will be light southwest. A little warmer with temperatures in the mid to high teens."
