A YOUTHFUL Treaty United side were stung at the death as a penalty conceded in injury time of extra time saw Ringmahon Rangers progress to the quarter-final of the Grandon's Toyota Munster Senior Cup with a 2-1 victory at Mayfield on Friday night.

And it was Anthony McAlavey who held his nerve to slot home the spot kick to give the Munster Senior League side the win.

Led by assistant manager Dave Rooney, Treaty Utd brought 12 teenagers in the 15-player squad as Tommy Barrett and some of the more established names prepared for Saturday’s friendly against Sligo Rovers.

“We already had the game with Sligo arranged and then this game was put in on top of it,” explained Rooney after the game, which was moved to the all-weather pitch at Mayfield hours before kick-off.

“It wasn’t that we were disrespecting the competition, we had the game with Sligo (arranged). We decided It was more beneficial for the lads to play the Sligo game.”

Despite playing most of their U20 squad, it was still a game Treaty should have won, according to the stand-in boss.

“Disappointed with the result, the performance was for the most part really good.

“We obviously missed a lot of chances, we should have been out of sight before the goal.”

The visitors took the lead on the hour mark through Scott Murphy. Cian Carmody played a delightful ball in from the right flank and Murphy rose highest to head to the back of the net.

Chances came and went for the League of Ireland First Division side but they couldn’t double their advantage. And they paid the price.

Six minutes from time, substitute Jack Cairns capitalised on lax defending to level the game.

Two 10-minute periods of extra-time followed and it looked like the shortened extra innings would be the prelude to a penalty shootout. However, a last-gasp attack from the Cork side led to a penalty after Luke Kiely went to ground.

Then, with virtually the last kick of the game, McAlavey slotted home the penalty to give his side the win.

“It was a learning experience for the boys, a great game for them to have. (Ringmahon) are a good side, a lot of ex-League of Ireland players so a good experience for the boys,” Rooney said.
