LIMERICK boxer David Finucane has set his sights on turning professional by the years end.

The Southill native is making a name for himself on the London boxing scene in recent times and the 28 year old middleweight is keen to make up for lost time.

“I’ve only really taken it seriously in the last two or three years but I can box until I’m 36 or 37 so there is plenty time - I’m a late bloomer,” Finucane told the Limerick Leader.

Now living in Bermondsey, South London, Finucane won a London middleweight title in Clapham Grand back in October and is now preparing for an March 3 title defence.

A fourth round knockout win over Marcus Stephenson secured the Limerick man the title and he is adamant that a title defence can be the springboard to further progress.

Next up is Ayman Sahki at the 02 Forum in Kentish Town.

“Ayman Sahki has a record of five wins and one loss and is originally from Morocco now based on London and I also have the same record of five wins and one loss,” explained Finucane.

“He is a good fighter but he will have to stop me. I know my movement will best him - I’m not the most powerful puncher but I lead with my jab and can counter punch once I have seen what he is like,” said the middleweight.

“If I can defend the title and maybe get into another defence, then I would look at turning pro by the end of the year,” said the Limerick boxer.

Finucane is now promoted by Walid Ali - the man responsible for the United Kingdom Boxing Unions Super Series.

“It’s kind of semi-pro - just a step up from amateur,” said Finucane of the Super Series.

In a twist of faith, Finucane is trained by fellow Southill native Mike Casey.

“I moved over to London in 2007 and Mike was here before me. When I was younger I did some boxing in Southill Boxing Club - mainly to keep me off the streets. When I came over the London, I was straight back into the boxing and I connected up with Mike Casey, who was training kids in the club,” outlined Finucane, who trains out of West Kingsdown Boxing Club in Kent.
