St Munchin's begin Munster Schools Senior Cup bid today

The Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Senior Cup

THE Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Senior Cup kicks on in earnest today Wednesday, January 23, when St Munchin’s College face Rockwell College in the opening round at Musgrave Park, 12.30pm.

In a change with the format which been in place in recent seasons, the Munster Schools Senior Cup reverts to straight knock-out in 2019. The winner of Wednesday’s tie will advance to the quarter-finals.

St Munchin’s, who last tasted Senior Cup success in 2006, did win the Junior Cup last season. The Corbally side have introduced many of that Junior Cup winning team into this year’s U19 Senior Cup squad with a number getting valuable game time minutes in recent warm-up games.

The St Munchin’s squad includes Ireland and Munster U18 and Munster U19 player Craig Finn, as well as Conor Sheahan and captain Mark Crowe who have played for the Munster U18s.

Alexander Wood, son of former Munster and Ireland hooker Keith Wood, who scored a terrific try in last year’s Junior Cup final, is another key member of the 2019 Senior Cup squad. St Munchin’s drew their recent Sean Connelly/Dudley Herbert Charity Cup match against local rivals Crescent College Comprehensive.
