John Terry watches Colchester win amid takeover reports

Jack Payne scored a late winner as Colchester beat Accrington 2-1 in game watched by former Chelsea defender John Terry, who is reportedly part of a consortium in talks to buy the Us.

Payne fired home in the 86th minute from substitute Romeo Akachukwu’s cutback to win it for Colchester.

Accrington had taken a 33rd-minute lead when Shaun Whalley collected Devon Matthews’ pass and twisted and turned in the area before striking low past Matt Macey and into the far corner.

However, Colchester, who had hit the woodwork early on through Harry Anderson, equalised in the 43rd minute through Will Goodwin, who bent a fine shot into the net from Owura Edwards’ pass.

Both sides had their chances after half-time, with Goodwin denied by keeper Ollie Wright early in the second half while at the other end, Charlie Brown fired wide and Luke Butterfield’s free-kick whistled just wide from the edge of the area.

However, Payne struck in the closing stages to secure a third successive win for Colchester.
