Andy Woodman urges Bromley to relentlessly head towards promotion

Andy Woodman called for his side to keep being relentless as they moved one step closer to a historic promotion from League Two.

An early goal from Bradley Ihionvien for the Shrews threatened to spoil the evening for Bromley but that deficit was overturned with a Marcus Ifill effort in the first half and a Kyle Cameron volleyed winner in the second 45.

Bromley manager Woodman said: “It was a very important three points that combined with our draw at Barnet on Saturday that makes it an even bigger three points.  We aren’t mathematically there yet but this was a huge win tonight. The other clubs in the promotion race, I know how they will be feeling having seen us win again.

He added: “The goal we conceded was sloppy, but I took the positives from it as our reaction to it was great. We didn’t let it affect us, once again we rode through the adversity and showed everything that we are about. All of our lads are chipping in with key moments this season and they stand on the cusp of achieving something great. I thought our management of the game in general was great and was the hallmark of today’s victory.

Shrewsbury got the game off to a lightning start, Ihionvien holding off Ifill in a foot race to shoot under Grant Smith to give the Shrews an early lead.

Matthew Cox kept that lead intact with a sharp reaction save from a corner with Grant Smith doing likewise at the other end to deny Iwan Morgan.

Bromley equalised seven minutes before half time when Ifill profited from Cameron’s knock down to scuff one beyond Cox.

Bromley carried that momentum into the second half, taking the lead four minutes after the restart. Cameron volleyed in after he reacted quickest to a bouncing ball.

With Bromley in control of proceedings Damola Ajayi saw his snapshot flash over the crossbar 20 minutes from time. But they didn’t need another goal to seal the three points as they moved seven points clear at the top of League Two with four games to play.

Shrewsbury manager Gavin Cowan said: “I thought we were excellent in the first 30 minutes, we executed our gameplan perfectly and should have been at least 3-1 up. Bromley are what they are, they are very transparent in what they do but they are very efficient at it and ultimately the game came down to quality tonight.

“Bromley won a lot of individual battles that end up with you winning the war, but that aside there really wasn’t anything in the game.

“We didn’t deal well with the big moments and its disappointing as the first half hour we were excellent but it felt like some of my players felt that losing 2-1 was acceptable but we have to have a deeper winning mentality at the club I want to change that culture.”
