Dunfermline brush aside Ayr to strengthen hold on play-off place

Dunfermline tightened their grip on a play-off place in the William Hill Championship by stretching Ayr’s winless run to nine league games with a 3-0 victory at Somerset Park.

Josh Cooper fired Neil Lennon’s fourth-placed side ahead inside a minute before Chris Kane doubled the lead early in the second period by converting from the penalty spot.

Keith Bray completed the scoring late on after Ayr were reduced to 10 men following the 78th-minute dismissal of substitute George Finney.

In League One, Cove Rangers eased their relegation fears after Adam Emslie’s winner earned a 3-2 success at Montrose.

Goals from Callum Sandilands and Lewis Gibson briefly put the Gable Endies ahead following Lewis O’Donnell’s first-half opener, but Mitch Megginson levelled before Emslie struck in the 82nd minute.
