Maya Le Tissier fumes as Man Utd’s set-piece woes strike again in European exit

Manchester United captain Maya Le Tissier rued set-piece defending after her side exited the Women’s Champions League to Bayern Munich 5-3 on aggregate.

United trailed 3-2 from the first leg but Melvine Malard struck early in Munich to level the tie and Marc Skinner’s side were nine minutes away from extra time.

But Glodis Viggosdottir and Linda Dallmann both scored from corners in the last 10 minutes as Bayern claimed a 2-1 win on the night and reached the semi-finals.

Le Tissier told Disney Plus: “I’m fuming to be fair. Two set pieces, it seems like every single game we have been knocked out on set pieces.

“Same in the FA Cup. It’s something that we need to work on and it’s just frustrating.

“The performance we put in today, especially in the first half, was definitely something to build on and we can be proud of that.

“We gave ourselves a hard task to do after the first game, but we fully believed we could go and win the game.

“Everyone is just disappointed because we had the confidence to win.”

United boss Skinner, whose side have also exited the FA Cup, lost the League Cup final and dropped out of the Women’s Super League top three in the last six weeks, suggested energy was a factor in the defeat.

“If I’m being really honest we’ve got 45 minutes of really high-level football then the second half it’s just down to fatigue and tiredness,” he said.

“They’ve not stopped running, they’re working, they’re moving, they’re doing everything they can. Bayern rested seven at the weekend. Then came into this game fresh.

“The energy was the difference, I’m not going to make excuses and reasons, you could see it.

“We knew how to beat Bayern in the first half and we couldn’t do it quick enough in the second half. That was the difference.”
