Luke Williams praises Peterborough character after draw at AFC Wimbledon

Peterborough manager Luke Williams was grateful to escape the Cherry Red Records Stadium with a point after a 1-1 draw with AFC Wimbledon.

The hosts dominated the first half and took the lead in the 43rd minute when a corner dropped to captain Ryan Johnson, who fired it past Alex Bass from close range.

The visitors were back level in the 67th minute after Jimmy-Jay Morgan tapped Cian Hayes’ pass in from close range, but the Dons pushed for a winner until the final minute.

Williams believes his side showed character despite a difficult afternoon in south west London.

“Yeah, it is a very fair thing to say [that it was not his side’s best performance],” he said.

“I think I have to be quite grateful for the point in the end because we could have definitely lost that game.

“But we showed some level of resiliency, and we showed some level of character to have a spell in the second half where we created a few chances.

“In that little block there, we got the goal, so credit to the players for that.

“We scored five goals in the last game [against Rotherham] and there is just no way your next opposition is going to turn up and play too open.

“I thought they did a great job, they were very aggressive man-to-man in the middle of the pitch, and they shut down passing lanes very well, so we have to be better at transferring the ball to open those gaps up.

“We did not do that well enough, I thought we did it well for 10 minutes at the beginning of the game. After that, we were not the best team of the pitch very often.”

The result leaves Peterborough and AFC Wimbledon level on 50 points in 12th and 14th place respectively in League One.

Dons boss Johnnie Jackson was proud of his side’s performance, admitting he was frustrated not to get all three points.

“I thought the performance was brilliant, I thought we were unbelievable to be honest,” he said. “I thought we dominated a good team for the majority of the match.

“We had to make forced changes during the game and we have still gone about it in a brilliant way.

“I don’t know how we have not won, to be honest, so obviously I am a bit frustrated that kind of performance has not got us three points.

“How can I be upset with the boys, the way they have given everything and gone about it against a really good team.

“I just thought we were brilliant, and it is just a shame we have only got one point, but it is another point on the board.

“When I reflect on it I will think that we are playing really well.

“I don’t know how we haven’t scored more in the end, but you have to credit them as well because the keeper has made some good saves and they have had to defend their box and they have managed to see it through.”
